Afraid to break the bonds

I glance around and wonder, as couples sit around,
as they fawn and coo in pleasure, if true happiness is found.

I have never been a double set, just me, myself, alone,
and for me to actually seek it... is to draw blood from a stone.

I've heard rumours and vague stories, of deep friendships, tried and true,
shattered by three simple words; they just said "I love you."

But as it was not true love, a simple infatuation,
it left the other party stunned, and in an awkward situation.

I wish not to hurt my female friends (as I am the straight persuasion),
and if I'm asked to 'join' them, I won't advance the situation.

Some of you may call me strange, it is irrational fear,
but I want to keep my friendships, the people I hold dear.

Until love comes and finds me, I'll keep to this, my place,
and not crumble under pressure; I'll go at my own pace...
